Blood pressure medication recalled due to impurity at unacceptable levels

MONTREAL – A trio of hypertension medications has been recalled due to the presence of an impurity.

Several companies recall irbesartan, iosartan and valsartan due to the presence of an azido impurity at levels above what is considered safe.

“Long-term exposure to the impurity azido at levels above what is considered safe could potentially increase the risk of cancer,” Health Canada said.

However, Health Canada has said it will continue to take the drug unless a health care provider advises you to stop, because “not treating your condition may pose an increased health risk.”

All three drugs are prescription angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) known as “sartans” which are used to treat high blood pressure to help prevent heart attacks and strokes.

Auro Pharma Inc. has joined with Sandoz Canada Inc., Sanis Health Inc., Teva Canada Ltd., Sivem Pharmaceuticals Inc., sanofi-aventis Canada Inc. and others in the recall of certain products.

Health Canada has said that companies marketing sartans should “carry out detailed assessments of their manufacturing processes and controls and perform testing if necessary.”

Those who take the medications listed on the Health Canada website should contact their doctor to find another prescription.
