Newly approved drug for those who wear reading glasses

The official definition of presbyopia is hyperopia caused by the loss of elasticity of the lens of the eye, usually occurring in middle or old age.

If that seems blurry to you and you squint, it might be you. If you’re reading this with reading glasses on, keep going.

The FDA has approved a new drug called Vuity. It is daily eye drops, and Dr Zania Al-Mohtaseb, who specializes in eye lens problems in her classes at Baylor College of Medicine, calls it really exciting.

“Just recently the FDA approved a drop for presbyopia. They conducted several studies and showed that in patients between the ages of 40 and 55, a gout helped improve their reading vision. “

With age, the lens of the eye loses its ability to change shape, which is necessary to focus on objects at any distance. It is very common and affects about half of the American population. Due to the demographics of Texas, approximately 23% of Americans with presbyopia live in the Lone Star State.

Allegan is the manufacturer of Vuity, the first and only eye drops that treat progressive disease.

Dr Al-Mohtaseb suggests if this rings a bell, check with your eye doctor. It won’t be available until early next year, but it’s worth checking out.
