The week in review: Start of hearings on the 2022 municipal budget | Chicago News

Budget hearings began Friday at city council for Chicago’s 2022 spending plan. Mayor Lightfoot presented his $ 16.7 billion budget to city council on Monday. It includes a basic income pilot program, investments in mental health and violence prevention, and increased funding for the police service.

Lightfoot has been criticized by some aldermen, including Ald. Gilbert Villegas who said the mayor had copied his proposed basic income ordinance in the spring.

This week, city council also held its first public hearing on the new neighborhood plans. Chicago’s Latino population grew 5% from 2010 to 2020, according to the latest census. The city council’s Latin American caucus hopes to increase the number of Latin American majority neighborhoods, and some organizations are pushing for the very first Asian-American majority neighborhood.

CPS COVID Protocols

The Chicago Teachers Union and some parents have raised concerns about the rollout of COVID-19 testing and tracing at Chicago public schools. Lighfoot told “Chicago Tonight” on Monday that she was disappointed with the district’s efforts.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Board of Education has approved Pedro Martinez as the next CEO of CPS. He also renewed a one-year, $ 11 million contract with the Chicago Police Department for school resource officers.

COVID-19 vaccination mandate

Lightfoot doubled the Oct. 15 deadline for city workers to get their coronavirus shots, saying it would not delay the requirement even if the unions representing Chicago police officers refused. Meanwhile, Governor JB Pritzker has reached the first agreement regarding COVID vaccine requirements with unionized workers in the state.

It comes as President Joe Biden plans to travel to Chicago on Wednesday to promote the vaccine trade mandates.
