Vitamin C, ascorbic acid, helps your body absorb iron and is important to include in your diet. A lack can have negative effects on your health, but taking too many supplements can lead to vomiting and sleeplessness. So how much should you take and how do you know if you’ve taken too much of the vitamin?

While too much vitamin C in the diet is unlikely to be harmful, massive doses of vitamin C supplements can cause problems.

There are seven key signs to look out for, according to the Mayo Clinic.

These include headaches, insomnia, heartburn, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps.

The NHS adds that gas could be a sign you’ve taken too much.

For most people, an orange or a cup of strawberries, chopped red pepper or broccoli provides enough vitamin C for the day, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Adults between the ages of 19 and 64 need 40 mg of vitamin C per day, so you should be able to get all the vitamin C you need from your daily diet.

DO NOT MISS

Your body does not produce or store vitamin C, which is why it is important to include vitamin C in your diet.

This is because the vitamin helps protect cells and keep them healthy, it also helps your body heal wounds.

Lack of vitamin C can lead to scurvy.

Nonetheless, scurvy is rare because most people get enough vitamin C in their diet and it is generally easy to treat.

Most people treated for scurvy feel better within 48 hours and make a full recovery within two weeks.

“Even people who don’t eat very healthily all the time are generally not considered to be at risk for scurvy,” says the NHS.

Studies show that consuming more vitamin C can increase your blood levels of antioxidants by up to 30%. This helps the body’s natural defenses to fight inflammation.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can increase your blood antioxidant levels and may help treat iron deficiency.

Vitamins are nutrients that your body needs to function properly and stay healthy.

You should get most of it from a balanced diet, but some people can take supplements to make sure they are getting enough.
